How to Spot a Bad Contractor

When you hire a contractor, you want the best-of-the-best that can get the job done without breaking the bank. You trust them to take good care of your home and property. Hiring a bad contractor can be a nightmare, and could lead to half-completed jobs, legal trouble, arguments, or unfulfilled promises.  The Basement Guys of Pittsburgh don’t want this to happen to you! We have a few warning signs to look for in determining a bad contractor and how our company is different.

  1. Working alone. Larger jobs obviously require more than one person to complete them efficiently and safely. If the contractor says they’re going to do the job alone, it might mean they don’t have the resources or money to pay additional workers. The Basement Guys of Pittsburgh have teams trained in each service we provide, and we know that no man gets left behind to do the job alone.

  2. No written estimates. This is sketchy, especially if the estimate seems low, or too good to be true. A bait-and-switch scheme could be happening here, which is when the contractor discovers the job is more difficult halfway through and counts on the homeowner to pay more so it’s completed. If they aren’t willing to give you a written estimate, don’t hire them! The Basement Guys of Pittsburgh give all our customers free written estimates. You can also ask for additional copies!

  3. Accepting Cash Only. Cash cannot be traced, but only offering one method of payment is not ideal. There is no protection if the cash-only job goes wrong because a check or credit card can be canceled or disputed. The Basement Guys of Pittsburgh accept a variety of payment methods, such as credit cards, loans, and checks.

  4. Professionalism. Unclean appearances, rude attitudes, or overall unpleasantness indicate problems. A lack of pride in their work can be unprofessional and predict a negative experience. If they aren’t professional upon meeting you, they lack respect towards you and your home. The Basement Guys of Pittsburgh do not tolerate rudeness or unprofessionalism in the workplace and understand that each customer needs to be treated with respect and professionalism.

  5. Negative Reviews. No one is perfect, and any business can get a negative review or two. But if each review is negative, this is a red flag. How a company responds to reviews is important too, and if they are aggressive or try to discredit the reviewer, this is not a good sign. The Basement Guys of Pittsburgh want to go above and beyond to make sure you are satisfied. This includes responding to bad reviews, where someone from our team will reach out to discuss and solve the issue.

Smaller problems to look for include the individual’s body language, exaggerations in speech, won’t give firm dates and times, and a bad gut feeling on your end. Trust yourself. Don’t let a bad contractor entice you into an agreement you might regret. The Basement Guys of Pittsburgh want you to work with the best contractor that will get the job done right and professionally.
